Southern Railway 15201-15203 0-6-0DE

Three shunters were ordered by R. E. L. Maunsell in 1936 for the Southern Railway to be of the 'standard' type. The mechanical parts were built at Ashford Works and delivered in 1937. Having the English Electric 6K engine and transmission, the bodies looked a little different. The rear of the cab had an offset back with the angle accommodating two windows. This allowed the driver to see the coupling process. They also had larger 4ft. 6in. wheels to enable them to clear the third rail in electrified areas. They survived into British Railways days being renumbered 15201-15203. They were all withdrawn and broken up in 1964.

Golden Arrow Models makes a cast resin kit of this type, intended to fit on the Bachmann Class 08 chassis with a little modification. The kit consists of just seven parts, the main bodyshell, cab rear, bonnet top, top cowl, radiator and steps. Having bought one of these kits, I am now in the process of making it. The castings are reasonable, but need a little fettling to get a good fit. I will add some extra detail to the body during construction.

Body assembly complete and now awaiting tidying up and fitting of additional details.
