Class 01, Andrew Barclay  0-4-0DM

This Barclay Class 01 shunter has been in the process of construction for a while now. The kit is one of Judith Edge's excellent etched kits and goes together reasonably easily. Being a Judith Edge kit though, there are a few tricky and difficult bits.

One of the first things I decided upon is that this would be a DCC model. This means that the Markits wheels are all of the insulated type to prevent problems with the chassis being live, especially as I use the Alex Jackson type coupling.

Judith Edge suggests a Mashima 1024 flat can motor and Romford 38:1 gearing. However, I had problems with this arrangement, mainly in the form of an eccentric gear causing uneven running. Instead, I have used a High Level Roadrunner 2 stage 54:1 gearbox, which gives excellent results.

There isn't much room for the motor, decoder and enough weight. I have put weight in the bonnet and fuel tank, under the cab false floor and even in parts of the chassis while trying to maintain an even balance.

The model is now nearing completion and uses a TCS 1296 Z2 decoder that's small enough and also powers a working cab light. The Z2 only has lighting outputs for head and tail lights, so the chip was reprogrammed to produce a continuous output forward and reverse on the head light output. The default f0 for marker lights was also changed to f1. Fortunately the TCS chips do allow for multiple lighting effects and full function remapping.
