Engine Class 02 0-4-0DH
Twenty Class 02 shunters were built by Yorkshire Engine Co. in two batches in 1960 and 1961. Their short wheelbase and slightly smaller size made them ideal for areas of restricted loading gauge and lines with sharp curvature such as docks. Indeed, the first deliveries were to Liverpool for that purpose. The original numbers were D2850-D2869. They became Class 02 under TOPS, but only three survived to recieve TOPS number. The Class 02's were powered by a Rolls-Royce engine driving through a Rolls-Royce hydraulic transmission. With changing traffic on the railways, they became surplus and were all withdrawn by 1975. Fortunately, seven have been preserved. This is a Craftsman Models white metal kit, although I believe it is actually a repackaged DJH kit. In any event, everything was complete in the Craftsman kit, including motor, gears and wheels. Very easy to put together with some epoxy resin glue and runs a treat.
I painted mine model BR Green. Transfers, including the wasp stripes, are my usual Fox Transfers. Built as D2857, it is currently still a DC only model. Conversion to DCC will happen eventually! As mentioned, DJH produce a kit of this locomotive. I'm sure it is only a matter of time before a major manufacturer produces a RTR version.
