Ruston & Hornsby Class 07 0-6-0DE

Ruston & Hornsby built fourteen Class 07's to replace the USA Tanks at Southampton Docks. Built in 1962, they were powered by a Paxman 6RPHL engine driving electric transmission. Originally numbered D2985-D2998, they were given the TOPS designation of Class 07. In the early 1970's, the remaining members of the class received high level air brake pipes to allow them to move SR EMU's. They were all withdrawn by 1977.

My model is made from a Craftsman kit with Romford wheels and a Mashima open frame motor driving a through a 38:1 gearbox. The kit is etched brass with white metal fiitings and goes together quite easily. One tricky area is the working lubricator linkage. This is the last item to be fitted after painting and varnishing as part of it is connected to the chassis whilst the top part is fixed to the body.

The livery needs a bit more attention, depending what livery you  paint it! They were originally painted in Southern Coaching Stock Green, not BR Locomotive Green, with the BR coach roundal, white and orange lining on the bonnet sides and wasp stripes.  The transfers are all from Fox Transfers. The orange/white stripes needed to be applied carefully. I first applied the white lining and let that dry thoroughly for a few days. I then applied the orange lining, very carefully in order not to lift the previously applied white lining.

Built as delivered, my model does not have the high level air brake pipes, although they were supplied in the kit.

The model currently DC only, but will be converted to DCC at a later stage along with a cab light as it does have interior detail. The model also features sprung buffers, working lubricator and Alex Jackson couplings.

Silver Fox have produced a resin bodied version.

As usual, having built a kit, although some time ago, Heljan announced in January 2016 that they are going to produce an RTR version. This duly appeared in Summer 2018 and a very good looking model it is too. Various versions were produced from the original, as per my model, through to TOPS numbered BR Blue with the high level ai brake pipes. The models even feature a working lubricator.
