Class 323 Hunslet Transportation Projects

The 43 three car Class 323 EMU's were built between 1992 and 1996 by Hunslet Transportation Projects in Leeds. They were amongst the last new trains delivered to British Rail before privatisation. Twenty-six went to Midlands to work the Cross City line, replacing Tyseley's aging fleet of First Generation DMU's. The remaining 17 went to Northern Trains working around Manchester replacing the older Class 304 and Class 305 EMU's.

Class 323 resin cast cab ends as supplied

My take on this EMU is a 3D Printed resin cast kit sold on eBay, from the same person as my Class 313 in fact. Three varieties are produced, original, mid-life refurbishement and current refurbishment. I have opted for the original 'as built' version. The kit consists of six half body shells. The correct halves are simply glued together and the gaps filled and smoothed off. My version will be in the Centro livery.

Further parts, such as etched window frames, bogie sideframes (motor bogies RFS BP62, trailing bogies RFS BT52)  and underfloor equipment will be produced at a later stage. Other parts have to be sourced separately, such as the Brecknell-Willis pantograph, seats, powered motor bogie, BSI Tightlock Coupler etc.

The original Centro livery is basically a variation of the Regional Railways livery, with the dark blue window band being replaced with green. The colours needed are: Roof - Executive Dark Grey (P147), Upper bodyside - Centro Green (P206), Provincial Light Blue (P153) and Rail White (P149) for the stripes and Lower Bodyside - Silver Grey (P180). In addition to the orange cantrail stripe, a variation with the Centro livery is a thin yellow stripe in the white band. Fox Transfers also produce suitable blue and white lining stripes, including the thin yellow band (ref. F4716).
