Class 395 Javelin The Class 395's are dual voltage six car EMU's built for high speed operation on High Speed 1 in Kent. Built by Hitachi in Japan in 2009, they are capable of 140mph. The Javelin nickname came about when they used on the London 2012 Olympic Javelin Shuttle service.
Hornby produce a model of the Class 395 Javelin units in both the standard dark blue and Olympic livery. There are two versions of the model, a 'Railroad' version and a more detailed 'Collectors' version. In the event, I left it too late to acquire one of these before they became sold out and have subsequently ended up with the three car 'Railroad' version. I am not too disappointed with the model and wonder what extra detail is fitted on the other version. It certainly looks the part. The model has working lights, apart from the top 'Cyclops' white light. This version has a different circuit board to the 'Collectors' version and does not have provision for DCC. However, it would not be too difficult to hardwire a decoder inside the body. Whilst I was at it, I would also take opportunity to fit the upper light. |
