Class 800 Super Express Hitachi AT300

The Class 800 series of trains are high speed bi-mode electro-diesel multiple units. They were built by Hitachi at their dedicated plant at Newton Aycliffe for use with GWR.

Originally a pure electric and classified as the Class 801, the trains were destined for the GWR, but delays and cutbacks in the GWR Electrification scheme caused a government rethink and a change to bi-mode electro-diesel units, classified as Class 800.

Hornby have been quick off the mark at producing a five car 'train pack' of the Class 800. The models were available from February 2018. The models are produced to Hornby's high standard and the price reflects this. As with the Class 390 'Pendolino', one driving car is powered, the other being non-motored. My unit is DCC Ready version and will require two decoders. One decoder operates the lights and motor in the driven car whilst the other decoder operates the lights in the non-driven car.

My version is numbered as 800 004 and named 'Sir Daniel Gooch' under the drivers window. The five car formation is: DPTF, MeC-B2, MeS-S2, S1L4 and DPTS.

The model ran smoothly and quietly from the box and features some quite nice detail. The pantographs are plastic non-operating types. They can be posed in the operating position, but as there is not a spring in the mechanism, it may be difficult to run them properly under overhead wires.
