'DELTIC' Co-Co English Electric

English Electric first offered the 'Deltic' type locomotive as a speculative prototype, appropriately named 'DELTIC', although sometimes referred to as DP1. Designed with export markets in mind, 'DELTIC' was finished in a light blue livery and sported a North American looking headlight on the bonnet top. Trials with 'DELTIC' were successful, but orders did not appear straight away. It took a few years until G. F. Fiennes, General Manager of the Eastern Region, persuaded the BTC to order twenty two production versions for high speed running on the East Coast Mainline to try and combat competing air traffic.

'DELTIC' remained the property of English Electric and was donated to the Science Museum in London, where it remained for many years. It has now moved to the National Railway Museum and been restored to working condition.

My first 'DELTIC' model was a converted Lima Deltic using the Craftsman Models conversion kit. Finished off with the correct Railmatch paint and Replica Railways name transfers, it produced a good model, notwithstanding the obvious body issues with the Lima Deltic.

The National Railway Museum commissioned Bachmann to produce an exclusive RTR model of 'DELTIC', and it is this excellent version I now run, converted to DCC.

Kitmaster had offered a plastic kit for many years, later appearing in the Airfix range. This kit is still available in the Dapol range.
