DP2 Co-Co English Electric

English Electric produced another speculative prototype in the form of DP2. This used a slightly modified production Deltic body (which were being built at the time) but was quite different mechanically. The aim was to produce a second generation Type 5 locomotive for which DP2 was the test bed. Instead of twin Napier Deltic engines, DP2 used the now uprated English Electric 16SCVT V16 turbo-charged intercooled engine set to produce 2,700hp. Quite an improvement from the original 1,600hp produced in LMS 10000! The locomotive also used electronics for the first time for control and engine management.

DP2 was highly successful, but it's career was sadly cut short when it was written off in a very bad accident at Thirsk. However, a follow on order for 50 type 5's was made, but unfortunately what BR got was not 50 DP2's, but 50 Class 50's! But that's another story!

My first attempt at DP2 was a Craftsman Models conversion of the Lima Deltic. Although a reasonable conversion finished in plain green, I was never overly happy with it. I then bought the Silver Fox Models body with a view to making that. However, Heljan then announced it would make a RTR version in the two livery varients. It is the plain green Heljan version I now run, converted to DCC.
