Now here's a strange bunch of locomotives! The Departmental Locomotives were used by various departments of British Rail, such as Engineering, Permanent Way and Civil Engineers. They were not part of capital stock and carried their own departmental numbers.

Some were 'standard' industrial products whereas others were bespoke locomotives.

Again, most were standard gauge, but a few were narrow gauge. The Horwich Works locomotives ZM9 and ZM32 were 18" gauge for instance whilst some of  the ex-GWR Simplex were 2ft. gauge.
