North Eastern EF1 Bo+Bo Electric

Ten locomotives were built by the North Eastern Railway to work the 1,500V dc overhead Newport-Shildon line. Originally numbered 3-12, electrical equipment was supplied by Siemens. The '+' in Bo+Bo is deliberate, as the bogies were connected by an articulated link and the drawgear and buffing gear are mounted on the bogies.

Although successful, the line was lightly worked, usually only requiring two locomotives. Traffic eventually dried up with the locomotives being put into store and the overhead equipment removed.

My model is one of Judith Edge's excellent kits. Although still under construction, completion is nearing. Powered by a Black Beetle bogie, it is DCC fitted and has Gibson sprung buffers. It will be painted in North Eastern lined black livery and will use HMRS NER transfers.

A running model awaiting final detailing and painting. The pantographs will be interesting to construct!
