This section covers the early experiments with Railcars and Multiple Units. Some of these early vehicles were petrol powered, some diesel.

The most well known of this group must be the Great Western Railway's railcars that lasted well into BR service. Among the more unusual experiments were the Micheline pneumatic tyred railcars that ran on the LMS.
