Class 89 Co-Co
The sole Class 89 was a prototype 25kV AC electric locomotive designed by Brush and built by BREL Crewe. It was tested quite extensively before being withdrawn and preserved at the Midland Railway Centre, Butterley. However, it was taken back out of preservation and used by GNER in their blue/red livery. After GNER use, it went back into preservation with the AC Locomotive Group. In April 2020, it was moved to Toton for a repaint into a new livery prior to being put back in service. This is a Silver Fox resin bodied kit running on a Lima Class 47 chassis. The kit has had a few modifications. I fitted see through etched brass grills from the former A1 Models range and modified the front light cluster so it appears to be behind covers. Sprung buffers are also fitted wit the transfers from the Fox range and a Shawplan 'Avocet' nameplate and crest. The model still needs a better pantograph and eventually I will get around to a proper Brecknell-Willis from Hurst Models. This was one of my 'pre-DCC' models and will be converted in time. I will also add working head and tail lights.
Rails of Sheffield in conjunction with Accurascale announced on 20th May 2020 their intention to produce a RTR model of this locomotive, including a working pantograph controlled through either analogue or DCC operation. |
