BR Class 76 Bo+Bo 1500V dc Overhead

The Class 76's, formerly EM1's, were Bo+Bo DC electric locomotives built for the Woodhead electrification. The '+' in Bo+Bo is correct as the bogies were connected by an articulated link with the drawgear and buffing gear mounted on the bogies.

The first locomotive 26000 'Tommy', was actually built by the LNER and is a little different to the 'production' versions. Follow this link for 'Tommy'.

My take on the Class 76 is a DC Kits resin bodied kit. As usual, I removed the moulded handrails and added separate wire handrails anchored with Gibson handrail knobs. The moulded roof mounted horns were also removed and replaced with turned brass ones.

The bogies are an unusually long wheelbase and as such, I opted to build the bogie provided in the kit. This uses 4' 0" diameter spoked wheels powered by a double ended 1426 Mashima motor driving through Branchlines 33:1 gears. Electrical pick up is through all eight wheels. I have also reproduced the articulated link between the bogies. Sprung buffers are fitted. The pantographs are Sommerfeldt 941 scissor types, but I believe MSL Models did do the correct version along with Judith Edge Kits. Nice touches included in the kit are the white and red discs that are placed over the marker lights.

The model has cab interior detail and is finished in lined green and off white roof as 26057 and is named Ulysses. 26020 and 26046-57 had steam heating boilers and the bodyside has the correct boiler filler flap on the side.

DC only at the moment, DCC conversion will happen at some stage.

Trix first produced a RTR Class 76 many years ago. DC Kits followed later with a rather crude white metal kit before replacing it with this much better resin body. MTK produced a white metal kit for a while. MSL models made an etched brass kit of both the prototype LNER 6000 and the production loco's. The latest offering is a RTR marketed by Olivia's Trains made by Heljan. Unfortunately it has a number of errors and is very overpriced. I'll be sticking with my kit!
